A never-before-seen look at the striking thematic parallels between KAWS and Andy Warhol, two of the most iconic artists of our time
As celebrated artists that draw from popular culture, KAWS and Andy Warhol are known for creating art that is approachable beyond the confines of the traditional art world. While at first glance, both artists' works often appear celebratory and joyful, they share a number of dark common threads beneath the surface: tragedy as spectacle and meditations on death and dying. When these two bold bodies of work are juxtaposed, that connection is made explicit and powerful.
This book highlights the artistic intersection of KAWS and Warhol, featuring their takes on death and disaster, advertising, nostalgia, abstraction, skulls, and self-portraiture. Accompanying a major exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum that will travel internationally, it presents some of the most standout and analogous works from two of the most popular artists of all time. -

The first serious study on the paintings of the female icon and one of the most celebrated British artists, Tracey Emin
Tracey Emin CBE is known for her frank, confessional style and for transforming her inner world into intimate works of art. She has become one of the most celebrated artists in the world, a household name, and part of the Art establishment.
Her practice includes painting, drawing, film, photography, sewn appliqué, sculpture, and neon, but in recent years she has focused on painting. Inspired by artists Egon Schiele and Edvard Munch, her paintings are provocative, confrontational, and vulnerable. They are at once deeply personal and universal, and it's for this reason her work is revered around the world, and she has become an international icon.
The book features more than 300 images of Emin's gestural and expressive figurative paintings, from the 1990s to today, as well as a conversation with close friend David Dawson and an essay by Australian writer Jennifer Higgie.
Made in close collaboration with the artist, this special book is the first publication dedicated to Emin's emotive paintings and showcases her soulful work like never before. -
Bruce Nauman (b. 1941) is one of the most innovative, provocative and influential artists working today. His pioneering explorations of sculpture, performance, sound, video and installations - always questioning the role of the artist - have broken new ground and inspired innumerable artists' careers.
Confronted with what to do in his studio soon after graduating, Nauman had the simple but profound realization that 'If I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art. At this point art became more of an activity and less of a product.' Exploring Nauman's relationship to the place where he creates his strikingly original works, Bruce Nauman: The True Artist retraces back to the artist's youth in Fort Wayne, Indiana, his graduate work at the University of California, Davis, through to the present day. Nauman's continual search for new means and sources of expression have led him to experiment with a very wide variety of medium (photography, performance, sculpture, installations, video, neon sign, and sound) as well as to explore the relationship between words and images. Nauman's apotheosis as one of the world's most highly lauded artists came as he was ranked No. 1 in the world by Artfacts.net in 2006, and he was the sole US representative in the American Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
Peter Plagens, best known to the general public for his work as art critic at Newsweek, has known Nauman for over forty years, and in his own words describes this book as 'about my trying to get at the real truth of Bruce Nauman's work'. They first met in 1970, when their studios were a block apart in Pasadena, California, and they played basketball together every Sunday. Since then Plagens has pursued a real understanding of his friend's art and in this book presents it from his uniquely insightful perspective, including chronicling as it happened the creation of works in Nauman's studio in Galisteo, New Mexico, and the organization, installation and reception of his exhibitions. Throughout, Plagens is a savvy and engaging guide to the work, using his own attempts to puzzle out the meaning of the pieces, and the artist's conversations about them, to offer the reader a vivid, personal and enlightening take on one of the key figures in contemporary art.

The first comprehensive monograph on one of today's most innovative and successful painters - made in close collaboration with the artist.
Defined by bold brushstrokes, a dynamic use of color and imaginative compositions, the paintings of Dana Schutz are panoramic expanses that offer visions of humanity in all its complex facets. Her deeply subjective approach, untethered from realism, translates into images that seem to exist in a place that transcends time while celebrating the intrinsic qualities of her medium of choice with freedom and intelligence. As the artist herself stated, 'I'm interested in painting as an affective place where the hierarchies of the world can be rearranged within the space of a painting.' This first comprehensive monograph on her work was created in close collaboration with the artist and features a number of never-before-seen paintings and drawings. -
Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) - sculptor, painter, draughtsman, teacher, theorist and political activist - ranks among the most radical and influential artists to emerge during the second half of the twentieth century. An enigmatic figure whose complex imagination drew on his research across a wide range of themes - including mythology, zoology, botany and the spiritual theories of Rudolf Steiner - Beuys strove to establish a truly democratic approach towards artistic creativity, and prove that modern art need not be confined to the museum or the gallery.
This book illustrates how from Beuys's provocative 'Actions' of the 1960s and 1970s, to his ambitious environmental project 7000 Oaks - which would lead to the mass planting of trees in a series of events that continued after his death - he was never one to shun controversy. His anti-authoritarian approach gained him respect and notoriety in equal measures. As Antliff effectively demonstrates, the ecological and political issues that informed much of Beuys's art can be considered as relevant today as they were in his own lifetime.

The first monograph dedicated to one of today's leading and thought-provoking Indian visual artists.
Shilpa Gupta is internationally known for her profound and socially engaged multi-faceted practice. Her work is an ongoing exploration of how human actions and interactions are subjected to a range of external and internal biddings, from socio-political constructs to personal relationships and technology. The synaesthetic nature of her practice is rooted in the post-liberalizing city of Mumbai in India, where she grew up in the 1990s, and the complex political landscape in South Asia.
Gupta's work has been championed by many art luminaries and high-profile curators, including David Elliott, Massimiliano Gioni, Geraldo Mosquera, and Hans Ulrich Obrist. She is the first artist from the Asian sub-continent - a region with a booming art scene - to be chosen to be profiled in the Contemporary Artists Series. A keen observer of the everyday, Gupta creates videos, interactive installations, sculptures, and participatory performances, stimulating in the viewer a reflection on how places and people are defined and the meaning of belonging. This is the first comprehensive monograph of her work. -
