Two Bauhaus masters and their impressive contributions to the art of textile design.
Gunta Stölzl (1897-1983) and the prominent Swiss artist Johannes Itten (1888-1967) were Bauhaus teachers who met in the experimental field during their time at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This volume takes a look at the artistic pairing and assembles in picturesque detail their impressive contributions to Swiss textile art.
Few people are aware that Itten made an in-depth study of textile design. Accordingly, this book invites readers to rediscover him as a textile designer in conjunction with Stölzl, who has a place in art history as a "classic of textile art." Both artists left Nazi Germany in the 1930s and explored innovations in ornamental and textile forms. Their work revived textile art in Switzerland with new ways of inventing forms and ornamentation and helped establish a network of modern Swiss textile art. -

An exploration of Paula Rego's complex heroines and modern fairy-tale pictures.
The female protagonists of the Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego either come from real life or derive from the world's great legends, fairy tales, and myths. As complicated heroines of our time, they have endured illegal abortions or fought against the limitations of traditional gender roles instead of dragons.
«My favorite themes are power games and hierarchies.» Rego's oeuvre is a tour de force of creativity. Endlessly versatile and inexhaustible, it is deeply rooted in pictorial worlds and stories from both past and present. This volume approaches the remarkable wealth of Rego's multi-faceted universe through a range of different perspectives and tells of the power of history and emotions, women's rights, and invisible structures of domination. -

Ai Weiwei is not only one of the most important contemporary artists; he is also an untiring activist and critic of authoritarian systems. "Humanity" includes key works from all phases of the artist's career and examines in detail the aspect of humanity and artistic responsibility in the oeuvre of Ai Weiwei.
The catalogue sheds light on concepts such as surveillance, censorship, human rights, freedom of expression, human displacement, radical responsibility, the power of beauty, and the truth of poetry. Guided by these thoughts, it offers new perspectives to understand the relevance of Ai Weiwei's artistic language. It will encompass a wide range of art-historical paradigms (such as the readymade) alongside more radical activist strategies, all aimed at exploring the extremes of the contemporary human condition on a global scale.

Compact, lavishly illustrated overview of artist Max Beckman's life and work.
Max Beckmann (1884-1950), the outstanding Expressionist painter, is regarded as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Beckmann's work reflected the social upheavals of his time, not only in his art but also through his extensive correspondence and diaries. He was an observer, a gentleman, a loner, and a reflective witness of his age. It is especially in his expressive self-portraits that we believe we can get closer to Beckmann's multi-faceted nature. Max Beckmann traces his artistic career and the principal stations of his life, from his years in Berlin and Frankfurt to his exile in Amsterdam and America. His works will be shown, including private photos and objects from amongst the artist's personal possessions. They are critical of the times in which he lived and bear witness to Beckmann's struggle with existential questions and his constant search for truth. -

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) is renowned for his two-dimensional, ornamental works, which made him famous worldwide as the most important representative of Viennese Art Nouveau. This volume provides insight into the artistic influences of the great artists of Modernism who helped to firm his remarkable oeuvre.
Vienna in 1900 - the Vienna Secession, galleries, private art collectors and art magazines - introduced the art of the European avant-garde into Gustav Klimt's surroundings. The Viennese artist was open to the pictorial language of his contemporaries including Alma-Tadema, Minne, Rodin, Toorop, Hodler, Van Gogh, Monet, Khnopff, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Matisse and many others, and adapted elements from a variety of styles. The publication presents in large-format illustrations the works of Klimt and artists who were close to him, revealing significant and often surprising parallels.

A richly illustrated survey of the work of one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century.
Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century. The unmistakable, touching language of her graphic and sculptural works is quickly grasped across cultures, enabling her work to be celebrated around the world.
Kollwitz debuted her graphic cycle «Ein Weberaufstand,» for which she drew inspiration from Gerhart Hauptmann's drama of the same name, at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1898. It was a great success, even as it caused a stir among the authorities because of its socially critical message. Outraged by the social ills of her time, Kollwitz dedicated her life to depicting people and giving a voice to the misery and grief of the poor and underprivileged in her works. Equally ingenious in terms of expression and artistic implementation, she took up themes such as farewell and death, peace, and the suffering of war in her graphics and sculptures. But she also offered intimate depictions of a mother and child, as well as self-portraits full of strength and beauty. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive overview of the artist's life and oeuvre. -

The first book devoted to a forgotten expressionist artist and the impact he had on his famous companion.
A multifaceted artist and charismatic figure in Vienna's art scene, Erwin Osen (1891-1970) is best known today as Egon Schiele's friend and one of his models. While their relationship inspired some of Schiele's masterpieces, Osen also left his mark on expressionism through his work, which is ripe for rediscovery.
A true Renaissance man, Osen counted drawing and painting among his art practices, as well as stage decor and set design, acting, pantomime, singing, cabaret, theater, and filmmaking. He and Schiele shared a studio, as well as an interest in the experience of patients in healthcare settings. Both a biography and a chronicle of the fruitful interaction between two artists, Erwin Osen shines a light on a fascinating and underappreciated creative. -
The American artist Sherrie Levine realises in her works the artistic praxis of appropriating, repeating and varying famous earlier artworks. At the same time in doing so she creates her own new oeuvre. Beyond the mere copy she further develops the works c onceptually and with historical cliches, presenting it to the viewer for reconsideration. Sherrie Levine (* 1947) is a photographer, painter and sculptor and is celebrated above all in the United States. When we fi rst consider her works we think of the im itation and interpretation of the reference works, but our conclusions about the copy soon disappear in favour of a new, autonomous original. The volume shows over 50 works "after" artists like Duchamp, Cezanne, Degas, van Gogh and Mondrian, from whose mas terpieces Sherrie Levine has created something new. In addition art experts place her work in context, for example with regard to her choice of subject or her methods of reproduction.

Gerhard Richter is among the most prominent painters of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a career spanning almost 60 years. Beyond his monumental abstract and photo-realistic works, his working method, artistic processes and philosophy are less well known. The Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz captures the notoriously camera-shy artist at work.

A concise and insightful overview of one of the most beloved artists in the world.
An iconic artist and feminist trailblazer, Frida Kahlo painted images that reflect her self-perception, fears, illness, and passions, often in the face of social taboos. Pride and strength, vulnerability and bitterness intertwine in her art. Drawing inspiration from her biography, Kahlo distilled her life experiences into her subject matter. Her self-portraits, which make up the principal part of her work, often depict a charismatic woman dressed in traditional Tehuana dress. Kahlo wore this attire to signal her Mexican identity, but also to hide wounds from her complicated marriage to the artist Diego Rivera, the bus accident that altered the course of her life, and the sorrow she felt over her childlessness. Though she portrayed scenes with exaggeration and fantasy, Kahlo disagreed with critics who described her as a surrealist: «That is wrong. I never painted dreams. What I portrayed was my reality.» This compact book includes many of Kahlo's most important works in context, explaining the subjects, ideas, and history that have contributed to her widespread acclaim -
A lavishly illustrated exploration of recent paintings by Heinz Mack.
Non-conformist and daring, German artist Heinz Mack recently turned his attention back to the canvas, after a break of more than twenty years. In the new works reproduced in this volume, Mack translates light, movement, and immateriality into the glowing worlds of the colors of the chromatic spectrum. Through the exploration of the juxtaposition of colors and visible brushstrokes in the genre of the monumental panel picture, he opens up a view of the infinite, the boundless, and the immaterial. Along with stunning full-color reproductions of Mack's work, the book includes conversations and letters in which he explains his ideas and sources of inspiration.
